Till the cows come home

(originally posted April 12, 2006)

Definition: a VERY long period, probably never

Example: Are you waiting for Rick to return your money? You'll be waiting till the
cows come home.

Origin/Explanation: Well, if you have a farm with a corral of cows, and you left the gate open. The cows will eventually wander out. Are they ever going to wander back
into the corral? Any chance of that? Unlikely.

The expression was popularized by the humorist and comedian Groucho Marx, in his movie "Duck Soup" (1933!) : "I could dance with you till the cows come home. Better still, I'll dance with the cows and you come home."
